CBD for Muscle Recovery in MMA Fighters
MMA which is also known as Mixed Martial Arts is a form of combat/ fighting that involves risks of attaining severe and unexpected injuries. Drugs like opioids were used in past times for the management and control of pain in MMA fighters, but because there have been several complaints of opioids addiction and liver problems in several MMA fighters, doctors hardly recommend it for their patients who are fighters. CBD was initially on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) list of prohibited substances, but it has been removed because its benefits and uses have gained a whole lot of publicity and recognition in recent times. Since recent discoveries of the benefits of cannabinoids coupled with the fact that it is non-addictive and non-psychoactive, CBD is now the substance of choice for pain management in MMA fighters and other athletes.
MMA fighters who use cannabinoid supplements have sung its praises and given testimonies on how it helped them deal with their pain and insomnia by allowing them to heal faster and sleep better. Rapid muscle healing seen in CBD use allows fighters to regain their muscle strength and enables them to train better for their next fight.
Asides from having analgesic and anti-insomnia effects, CBD also functions as an inflammatory agent and an anti-anxiety agent. CBD is also reported to provide relief to fighters who complain of muscle soreness following physical activity or training. Studies and records have also proven that CBD increases the body’s metabolism and helps to improve cerebral focus.
CBD is also said to be a neuroprotective agent; it is the treatment of choice for MMA fighters who are subject to head trauma as a result of repeated head insult which leads to a concussion. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a form of traumatic brain injury that develops after repeated head trauma, as seen in MMA fighters.
In CTE, tau; a plague like substance builds up in the brain and hinders some functions of the brain. Tau elicits symptoms such as memory impairment, changes in mental status and cognitive disturbances. Cannabinoids are rich in antioxidants, and these antioxidants help to breakdown tau thereby reducing the progression or eliminating the symptoms of confusion and memory loss in patients suffering from CTE.
With CBD having shown so many beneficial uses in the treatment of joint pain, muscle pain, and soreness, chronic pain, fatigue, and insomnia, it is no surprise that the number of MMA fighters who use cannabinoids is on the high side. The UFC President and MMA Icon, Dana White when interviewed on drug use in MMA sporting activities said ” Everybody thinks that if you did this random testing you’d catch so many guys on Performance enhancing drugs, No, you’d catch more of the guys on marijuana. That’s where you’d bust a lot of guys. we’ve got 475 guys under contract, and 400 of them would be out with marijuana suspensions.”
