CBD and Insomnia

Insomnia is a condition where people find it difficult to sleep due to one reason or another. Over the years, insomnia has become very common amongst people, and those suffering from it had no choice than to pop sleeping pills to help them sleep. The downside of these sleeping tablets is that they have several side effects linked to their usage and some cases have been reported where sleeping pills do not help with a person’s insomnia. Insomnia can be so severe to a point where it begins to affect a person’s daily output and functioning; it can cause impairments to a person’s social and emotional life. Insomnia is usually associated with other symptoms such as memory loss, irritability, fatigue, cognitive disturbances and weakness which can be incredibly frustrating and bothersome to a person, and can even get as worse as causing depression! Insomnia is not a medical condition that should be toyed with or treated with laxity; it requires effective management!

With the discovery of the numerous benefits of CBD oil and its role in insomnia, people with insomnia are presented with a better alternative for the management of their sleeping disorders and the fascinating thing about CBD is that it has no adverse effects. CBD helps to reduce insomnia and to improve the quality of sleep and sleep duration, especially in people whose insomnia is as a result of chronic pain.

Cannabinoids have been shown to reduce daytime sleepiness and sluggishness, thereby stimulating daytime awareness and ensuring that the regular homeostatic sleep-wake cycle is observed by the body. CBD also helps in the management of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) behavioral sleep disorders in people who have Parkinson’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorders.

Normal rapid eye movement (REM) phase of the sleep cycle is characterized by dreams, eye movements, and paralysis but in people with REM sleep disorders, paralysis does not occur, and this results to motor movement such trying to physically react to their dreams. People suffering from REM sleep disorders tend to harm themselves or their sleep partners, and this can lead to them developing phobias for sleeping and then insomnia.

The postulated theory is that cannabinoid acts on the body’s endocannabinoid system which is a component of the immune system and helps it t regulate and balance the body’s homeostatic mechanism. Another theory is that CBD has an anti-anxiolytic effect and helps to control anxiety and subsequently to improve the quality and duration of sleep.

While there’s no doubt that CBD can help with the effective management of insomnia without causing any side effects, causing addiction or even getting you high, it is best advised that before you start taking CBD oil for your condition, run it through your doctor and receive advice and approval.
